Initiatives
Carretta has five main initiatives to protect rare sea turtles.
- Education / Awareness Activities We will communicate the necessity of coexistence between people and the natural environment, including sea turtles, through museum activities to all who desire it, regardless of race, national borders, or occupation.
- Monitoring of spawning ashore in the town The continuation of the sandy beach environment of the future is aimed at by reading the impact from environmental changes and development, and enlightening the public with data and conveying to posterity the activities of sea turtles on the beach that have continued since ancient times.
- Bycatch tagging release survey In cooperation with local fishermen, we will record data on sea turtle status and fluctuations in the sea for conservation purposes. In Addition, we will provide temporary protection for debilitated individuals.
- Deadly drift survey We will quantify the impact of humans and sea turtles by surveying individuals that wash up on the beach and monitor their fluctuations.
- Artificial breeding of loggerhead sea turtles Using captive specimens from the museum, we aim to artificially breed loggerhead turtles in order to restore the population of the endangered North Pacific loggerhead sea turtle.
Crowdfunding
The Hiwasa Sea Turtle Museum Caretta is one of the few museums in the world specializing in sea turtles.
We will make a space more comfortable for the sea turtles living here!

Corporate version hometown tax
As part of the national government's efforts to promote regional development,
we hope that companies will proactively donate to local revitalization projects carried out by local governments,
the tax system for supporting regional development (corporate version of Furusato tax payment) was established in the tax reform of fiscal year 2008,
and was expanded and extended in fiscal year 2020 to encourage companies to actively donate to regional development projects conducted by local governments.
